Chewable Items – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are chewable oral-motor tools used for?

Chewable tools provide a safe outlet for individuals who have a sensory need to chew — such as chewing on hands, clothing, or other inedible objects. They can also support learning to chew or feed, increase oral awareness, assist with desensitisation around the mouth and face, and help develop speech skills.

How can chewable items make life better?

Chewable tools can help improve daily routines by offering calming oral-motor input. They may support emotional regulation, reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus during seated activities, and provide a safe alternative to chewing on fingers, knuckles, shirts, pencils, or other non-safe items. This can protect clothing, reduce frustration, and promote independence.

Are chewable items toys?

No. Chewable items are not toys. They are therapeutic oral-motor tools designed for sensory and regulation support.

Can the necklace cords or clasps be chewed?

No. The cords and clasps are not designed for chewing and should not be placed in the mouth.

Can I return chewable items?

For health and hygiene reasons, chewable items cannot be returned. Chews may be returned at our discretion, but only if the packaging is unopened and the item is in brand-new retail condition.

Are chewable items safe for young children?

Chewable items may contain small parts and pose a choking hazard. They are not recommended for children under 5 years unless specified by a qualified professional. Chews supplied by Sensory Corner are made with food grade silicone. The Ark Therapeutic chews are UKCA and CE certified.

Do chewable items require supervision?

Yes. Parental or caregiver supervision is essential at all times to ensure safe use.

When should a chew be replaced?

Chewable items must be replaced immediately when signs of wear appear, such as thinning, tearing, or cracking.

How long will a chewable item last?

Longevity varies widely. It depends on how often the chew is used, how intensely it is chewed, jaw strength, and factors such as stress or anxiety levels. No chew tool is indestructible — wear and tear is expected.

What chew strength should I choose?

Chews vary in toughness. Softer chews are suitable for light chewing or sucking. Tougher chews are designed for individuals who bite down with more force. Choosing the right strength depends on chewing intensity, jaw strength, and individual sensory needs.
